[There is a giant, living boulder...thing on campus. It's snake-like in appearance and is just kind of milling about, sticking its giant rock nose into bushes, peering into second-story windows, leaving the campus lawn all torn up in its wake. Hey man, you can't be a massive stone-serpent and not leave a some kind of trail. It's around various places all day, and very clearly seems to be giving the place a once-over.

One might easily ignore the young man that accompanies this gargantuan creature (or is it the other way around?) if not for the fact that he is wearing an obnoxious shade of bright orange. Still, it might take you a few moments to notice him, given the sheer size of his rock-like companion. He carries a backpack, and a map which he refers to every so often.

What is most interesting about this duo, perhaps, is the fact that they seem to be actively conversing, albeit in different languages. Occasionally this mysterious arrival hitches a ride on his stony friend along their self-guided tour. It's obvious that they're evaluating the school with a sort of non-verbal running commentary, perhaps looking for a familiar face or two.

Is it like this for all Pokemon or just your Slowpoke?

It works on Char and Bulba and Blastoise and Bob, but Bob talks to you in your head so I guess that probably don't count.

Uh... she's some sorta giant pokemon who looks like... a really big... white... horse... llama... deer... thing... with yellow... circle-pointy-golden-bolt things... on her back...

And she's really old. Only she likes the 80s. And muffins.

And she was married to Olaf for awhile, I guess. That was weird.

[Brock gives Onix a look, and the Pokemon, in turn, lets out a low growl that probably equivocates to "ok sure go for it big shot".]

No, my name's Max. That's pretty close, though.

Uhh... Onix. Tell me somethin' about Brock I shouldn't know. Like. I dunno. How much can he bench or somethin'. Wait maybe you don't know that. How about, uh, where'd he meet you first?

[Onix grumbles something that equates to "at the gym, where else?"]

Oh well, lotsa places. I met Slowpoke at aquarium-jail-place. Other guys tell me that where you're from there's a bunch of pokemon runnin' around outside that people catch in those little ball things.

So at the gym? Then did somebody... give you to him? I guess Bulba said that when a pokemon trainer starts out that somebody gives them a pokedex thing and a pokemon. And that one guy who used to be here, uhhhh.... Oak. Oak gave Bulba to Green.

So did that Oak guy give you to Brock?

[Oh wow. Maybe he is the Pokemon whisperer. Brock is perhaps a tiny bit bewildered, while Onix keeps right on going.

Not Oak. Brock's dad.]

Then were you his dad's pokemon? Did his dad work at the gym?

[His dad was the gym leader before he was. comes the gruff reply.

Brock is stunned.]

Oh that's neat. My dad was in the army before I signed up, too. So did Brock's dad, uh... catch you in the wild and give you to Brock or did he, I guess, buy you from a... onix... place?

::Max turns to Brock::

Not. Quite. It's more like. I can feel what he's sayin' to me than I know just what ONIX ONONIX IX means. 'Cause me sayin' that means nothin' to me. I probably just told him he's got an ugly mug or somethin'. It just felt like he was talkin' about me bein' a tough guy or big shot or somethin' then it felt like he said he met you at the gym and then that your dad used to run the place. That sorta thing.

::Max turns back to Onix:: I don't think you got an ugly mug.

That's...that's incredibly interesting.

[Brock is maybe studying you now. Onix is still talking.

There are no Onix...places, we live in caves. I was caught in Mt. Moon at a low level and given to Brock.

And don't worry. I knew you were just making an example.]

Oh alright. You're a lot more chatty than Slowpoke.

Do you like bein' Brock's pokemon instead of livin' in a cave? If I ask Slowpoke why he keep's comin' back he tells me I'm warm.

[He is a Slowpoke.

Meanwhile, Brock is GOING CRAZY. Sure, he and Onix have manly bonded over the years and more or less understand each other but this conversation seems VERY SPECIFIC.]

Alright, that's good to hear. Every pokemon I ever talked to really likes their trainer a lot. Even if they ain't a real trainer. It's sorta strange. But I guess workin' together and gettin' stronger makes you respect each other.

::A strange look crosses Max's face::

Hey, how much do you weigh?

...Me or him?

::Max is surprised by the lack of poketalk::

Well, I meant him, but both I guess. You gonna come here as a student? Could use you on the football team.

Onix? About four-hundred-sixty.

Oh, I'm just visiting.

What? How does he only weigh four-sixty? I weigh three-fifty-somethin'. And look at him. That can't be right.

::Max takes Slowpoke off of his shoulder and turns to Onix::

I wanna try pickin' you up to see, you okay with that?

[Brock shrugs. Pokemon work in mysterious ways. Onix, however, appears skeptical.

Don't hurt yourself.]

Uh...Max, I'm not sure that's a good idea.

He said it's okay. You maybe should stand back some.

::Max goes up to the end of Onix's tail. And he picks up the linked boulders on that end with great ease::

Wow, those look heavier than that. Huh. Alright then.

::Max hoists the boulders on his shoulders::

Alright Onix you stand up now, like you were earlier when Brock was on your head.
